Better FSR (Native Res Replacer)

Visuals and Graphics

What does this do?

Makes FSR look way better… Better than native resolution in most cases… This is a more experimental version of my

Better FSR (ini Tweaks)

mod…

So don’t combine the two… This mod is intended for people that want the image quality boost from that mod (better, actually) but that don’t need the performance gains from FSR…

V1.2 reduces the flickering of lights with FSR on

(this is vanilla FSR behavior, btw)… Now it truly is better than native resolution in almost every conceivable way,

in my opinion

(aside from performance, but just a slight reduction of min/max res with DRS can rectify this without much detail loss)…

I also included an optional file

in the “Miscellaneous” files section that will completely

disable bloom

, which will completely resolve the flickering lights issue, but may be kinda ugly in some scenes/areas without it…

Worse than native performance with FSR?

Yep… And that’s actually normal with my recommended settings… Just not to this extent…

Okay, so what are these “recommended settings”?

Set FSR to Auto… Turn on DRS… Set the target FPS to 10 and max res to 100% and apply… Set the min res to 100% and apply… I prefer 0.05 sharpening (though 0.25 is used in the screenshots), but that’s entirely up to you… And that’s it… Just make sure to always change then apply max/min resolutions separately… The game will force the min res to be lower than the max otherwise… And now you have FSR without any actual upscaling or downscaling… Still running native res, but with the better AA of FSR…

Note:

Combining DRS and FSR in this way can cause flickering of clothing in the wardrobe/inventory interfaces… As far as I can tell, it only affects these two menus… This is vanilla behavior, not caused by the mod… To avoid this, don’t use DRS…

Can I still get better performance if I set the DRS resolutions lower and target FPS higher?

Yes, you can… And to a point, it will still produce better than native images… I would not advise to let DRS actually dynamically adjust the resolution, though… You will want to set the minimum and maximum resolutions to the same percentages… Otherwise you’ll get full-screen flickering when the resolution changes…

You also still have the option of just not turning on DRS at all, too… I’ve actually been playing with “Quality” FSR and no DRS myself (as you can see from screenshots, my PC can’t handle 100% 1440p with or without FSR)… “Quality” is ~77% of native resolution for anyone curious, btw…

Slider Comparison Image

(1440p Native vs FSR with my recommended settings and this mod… The rest of my graphics settings were basically the “High” preset)… Notice the drop in framerate, then notice why…lol… Just look at any part of this image…

Slider Comparison 2

(1440p Native vs FSR with locked 50% resolution through DRS)… Note that this shifts the GPU bottleneck to the CPU in this scene, but still gets massively better FPS…

See the “Articles” tab for shots comparing against default FSR (and notice that there’s not a huge difference because there’s just not really gonna be in still images)…

Known Issues:

In one spot I’ve found so far, there’s a couple light strips that flash weirdly… They do this with vanilla FSR, too, but it’s definitely more noticeable with this for some reason… I’ve been around these particular lights many times with FSR and never noticed it until using this mod… Removed the mod and it’s still there, but not as bad… These are the light strips along the sides of V’s MB10 Apartment mirror (which aren’t even turned on so definitely shouldn’t be flashing…lol)… Luckily, you can’t see these strips while actually using the mirror, so I see this as pretty insignificant… These issues could creep up in more places, though, so be aware… I’m not worried about fixing it right now as it doesn’t really affect any gameplay yet (and I don’t want to sacrifice any quality elsewhere trying to fix it), but if it ever does I’ll try to figure something out…

Version History:

1.0 – Initial Release

1.1 – Just a few minor tweaks… Nothing that really affects anything… Maybe slightly better contrast and mirror quality… Update if you’d like to, but not needed…

1.2 – Reduced FSR’s flickering lights issues by disabling auto-exposure and increasing pre-exposure…
